I can fully understand why Louise made this choice - ignorance is bliss and all that - but there's no way I could commit to avoiding the news everyday. Maybe it is because I am extremely curious by nature or I am such a girl of routine I don't think I could go without my twice daily fix. The first thing I do every morning is click onto the Sky News app on my phone.
However, this week the news has been exciting, appalling and then downright repulsive. The foolish prank which went massively wrong.
In case you're not aware of this abhorrent news story, here's a quick rundown:
The Duchess of Cambridge was admitted to King Edward VII hospital earlier this week due to suffering with hyperemesis gravidarum (acute morning sickness). During her hospital stay two stupid Australian DJs took it upon themselves to make a prank call to the hospital imitating the Queen and Prince Charles.
The nurse, Jacintha Saldanha, who answered the hoax call and believed it really was the Queen transferred it to the nurse caring for the Duchess. Unfortunately the nurse was also fooled by the hoax callers and answered all of their questions regarding Kate's health and progress.
Since this hoax call was made the DJs from 2DayFM have revelled in the fact they had become international news headlines and boasted about it at any given opportunity. Whilst they were celebrating their worldwide fame they didn't consider how the victims of the hoax call could be feeling.
Sadly the nurse and also mother of two, Jacintha, died yesterday and it is suspected she committed suicide. Dreadful news. I cannot imagine what this well respected woman endured in her final days and it is very distressing for something so tragic as this to have occurred.
The radio presenters behind the hoax have been taken off air following this tragedy and it would be only right that neither of them return to the radio station ever again. They have both deleted their Twitter accounts after global backlash following the death of Jacintha.
Awful isn't it? Something deemed as just a practical joke, to get a laugh, has caused such devastation. My heart goes out to the family of Jacintha Saldanha.
